10 Modern Interior Design Details

Give your home a more comfortable and vintage vibe by transforming it with elements of modern interior design. This mid-19th-century inspired style finds the balance between boldness and subtlety, natural and industrial, and combines the old with the new.

Follow these 10 tips and you can also achieve the modern interior design balance in your home:

Less is More

Modern interior design places an emphasis on minimalism and simplicity. If your room gets cluttered with too many bold textiles, pieces of art, or furniture, your eyes won’t know what to concentrate on. So, choose one or two art pieces, one textile pattern, and keep the rest of your space in neutral colors.

Large Windows

One of the great parts of modern interior design is that it embraces aspects of the natural world. What better way to embrace it then let in as much natural light as you can? Large windows will not only let in more light but also make your room feel more open and spacious.

Keep it Natural with Wood

Keeping with the natural aspect of modern interior design, use wood furniture and accents to give your design a more organic, comfortable vibe. A couple of ways this can be done is by placing a dark wood table in your dining room or light wood floors throughout your entire space.

Bring in the Industrial Side with Metal Accents

Now that we’ve got the natural part of modern designs down, we need to incorporate the industrial side. Using metal accents, such as chrome legs on furniture or stainless-steel side tables, will complete the balance between the natural and industrial look that modern interior design strives for.

Vintage Accessories

Many elements of modern interior design are based off mid-19th century designs. So, complete the mid-century feel by using vintage and antique decorations, which can be found at antique stores, flea markets, or even yard sales.

Choose One or Two Decorations to be the Focal Point

Once again, less is more. By having one or two main art pieces or accessories in a neutral-colored space, you are emphasizing those pieces as the focal point in the room. Too many focal points and your mind will get confused, so choose your favorite pieces, such as a vintage chrome chandelier or a canvas painting on the wall, then keep everything else simple and neutral.

Neutral Color Palette With One Bold Color

To make the art pieces and accessories stand out, you should keep the majority of your space in neutral colors. One great way to do this is to keep your walls white. However, you can add some boldness to your space by choosing one saturated accent color, such as red, green, or blue.

Solid, Neutral-Colored Furniture

Let those paintings on your wall stand out by having simple, neutral-colored furniture. Or, if you have a bold color in your design like red or blue, combine your bold and neutral colors in the furniture to make them pop.

Geometric Textile Piece

This textile piece could be curtains or a large rug in the living room. Choose a pattern that is powerful, defined, and has clean lines, such as large circles or smooth, curvy lines.

Have an Open Plan for Your Space

Get rid of those unnecessary wall dividers and keep your rooms open, such as having your kitchen open to your dining room. This will make your home feel more spacious, free, and comfortable.
